Dr. Pangloss's Ever Lasting Views in Candide

In everything Candide does, Dr.Pangloss's teachings always show. Pangloss is a very optimistic person on how our world is. However, as Candide goes on his adventure enduring all of the evils of the world. He meets so many people who aren't exactly agreeing that this is the best the world can be. People like Martin and the Old Women believe that evils in this world are very over powering. That our so called God is being unfair to them, and if he is oh so powerful he should not be doing this to us. Therefore, everywhere Candide goes he always keeps Pangloss's teachings in his mind and that makes him questions all of these encounters. Candide is a very unsure character of the world. Pangloss's views are the only thing he knows so how else can he think. Encountering all these people are making his even more confused. Hopefully he can learn how to think his own thoughts by the end of this book.

  1. I agree with your point that Candide is an unsure character. I think being that he lived in this "perfect" world in his palace most of his life, he did not get to experience the "un-perfect-ness" of the actual real world. I also believe that Pangloss' unreal optimistic view on life gives him more room to adhere to adversities as he does, for example everytime he would experience something terrible, he would realize something good would happen thus it fullfils Pangloss' philosophy of "the best of all possible worlds" -Trinh

  2. I think his sureness behind Pangloss' philosophy withers more and more as the book goes on, beginning with the hanging of Pangloss to realizing that maybe Westphalia was not the best of alll worlds because at Cayenne, he didn't experience warfar, earthquakes, etc.

  3. I also agree that Candide is an unsure character. I feel like if he didn't know Pangloss' teaching he wouldn't know what to think or say about the evilness of the world. Candide would be clueless as to do to do in the situations that he has faced along the way. In a way I feel as if Pangloss helped Candide during his horrible moments even with him gone. Yes hopefully Candide will learn how to be on his own and be able to make his own decisions.
