When Candide and Cacambo were on their journey they saw a man "stretched upon the ground, with only one moeity of his clothes, that is, of his blue linen drawers; the poor man had lost his left leg and right hand." Candide then asks him what he was doing lying there in that condition and he said he was waiting for his master. Candide knew who his master was and he was very shocked by the condition the man was.
